Albums, Singles, TV & Film

Byron was raised in North Carolina in a family of six. In 1953 the family lived in Winston-Salem, and soon after moved to the nearby community of South Fork. It was the perfectly-imperfect setting for a family in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s… a school, two churches, a volunteer fire department, a barber shop, a beauty shop, a doctor, a veterinarian, a drugstore, a grocery store, a cloth shop, a couple of gas stations, and the freedom of innocent times for kids to run through fields, creeks, woods, and fading farmland, while only a few miles from the textile mills, cigarette factories, and the location of the first Krispy Kreme doughnut shop in America. The chances were pretty good that someone in the family might find a way to put some of that “Americana” into songs. Byron’s father played guitar and harmonica, and often sang old Carter Family songs around the house. By the age of 10 Byron was learning how to play guitar and was writing songs by the age of 16. In 1976 at the age of 22, he began taking his songs to Nashville and finally moved there and signed his first publishing deal in 1978.

Thank you to Music Row Magazine and journalist Robert K. Oermann and his amazing review of the new album and single:
BYRON HILL / “Mountain Folks Are Always High”
Writers: Byron Hill/Glen Carlton Duncan; Producer: Byron Hill; Label: BHP Recordings
Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Byron Hill is noted for hits he’s written for George Strait (”Fool Hearted Memory”), Tracy Byrd (”Lifestyle of the Not So Rich and Famous”), George Jones (”High Tech Redneck”), Alabama (”Born Country”), Johnny Lee (”Pickin’ Up Strangers”), Sammy Kershaw (”Politics, Religion and Her”), Gary Allan (”Nothing on but the Radio”), Neal McCoy (”If I Was a Drinkin’ Man”) and other mainstream country stars. But he’s always had a bluegrass heart, and that’s what you’ll hear on his new CD That Old Mountain. Its single is a skipping, merry, light-hearted ditty about being high on life. Gentle, acoustic, sunny and warm. Very endearing.

Fans of the RadioMaxMusic website and certainly fans of George Strait will enjoy the October 2nd post on RadioMaxMusic featuring Strait’s 1982 album Strait From The Heart. Of particular interest, all the musician credits are listed in the post. Strait from the Heart is the second studio album by Strait, released on June 3, 1982. The album includes Strait’s first No. 1 single, “Fool Hearted Memory” (Hill/Mevis).

From an interesting article by Sterling Whitaker (Taste Of Country, Oct 9th): George Strait has appeared on the hallowed stage of the Grand Ole Opry just once in his entire career. His debut on the Opry stage on was on Oct. 9, 1982 — and to this date, he has never returned in a solo slot. According to another publication (Saving Country Music) Opry historian Byron Fay, who confirmed Strait’s 1982 Opry debut. According to Fay, Strait appeared during the 8:30 segment during the early show on Oct. 9, then came back at 11:00 during the late show. The singer was promoting his sophomore album, Strait From the Heart, which had already yielded a No. 1 hit with “Fool Hearted Memory” by the time he took the Opry stage. He would release “Marina del Rey” one week after his Opry gig, so it’s a safe assumption that he played both songs during his sole Opry appearance, but no record of his performance that evening appears to exist. Columnist Darrell Huckaby publishes a twice-weekly column called What The Huck on the very popular  Substack platform. Mr. Huckaby (“Huck”) quotes some of Byron’s lyrics to the song “Blame It On Kristofferson” in his recent column entitled Saying Goodbye to a Genuine Genius. The column pays great homage to Kristofferson, and closes with some poignant words from Huck that so many Kristofferson fans and songwriters can relate to…. “Thank you, Kris. I don’t know what we have ever done to deserve being the beneficiaries of your genius, but I am grateful for the songs you left behind for us to enjoy. Rest easy, and we will see you on the other side.” [About Darrell Huckaby – The Wit and Wisdom of the Last Southerner. Huck’s down-home humor and unique reflections on life in the South “the way it was, the way it used to be, and the way it ought to be” make him a favorite with his readers. New columns each Wednesday & Sunday. Available on Substack at: https://dhuck.substack.com/. The song “Blame It On Kristofferson” is from Byron’s (2010) Stay a While album, available on this website, and at all popular streaming sites.]

Thank you to Journalist Michael Clark of Johnson City, TN for this very nice review! “Byron Hill, one of the most-respected hit songwriters in Nashville, has a new album, “That Old Mountain,” that I highly recommend. With a voice that’s smooth and unaffected, much like the late Don Williams, these seven bluegrass-based tunes are like a fine country wine; they envelop your with wave after wave of nostalgia and wisdom. Hill, a Carolina boy, has written legendary country tunes, dating back to “Fool Hearted Memory” for George Strait, and continuing right up to date. The title track here is wisdom-packed, from a man who has been on top of that chosen mountain in his career, and for my money, still is. A+”
